Democratic Congressman Vicente González, who represents Texas's 34th district, is in one of the most competitive races for the House of Representatives for this state. Despite the divisive rhetoric of former President Donald Trump, González is confident that the voters in his district will not be swayed by this polarizing discourse.
González will face former Congresswoman Mayra Flores, a Trump supporter, on November 5 in a contest to see which of the two trends will prevail in the district. This area has gained significant relevance for both parties, as it could be decisive for control of the House of Representatives, currently dominated by Republicans, where Democrats need to maintain their seats and gain four more.
The race has focused on key issues such as immigration and the economy, being addressed from very different perspectives. González criticizes the divisive rhetoric of Flores, which he identifies with that of Trump, and expresses his dismay at the "lies" about the invasion of immigrants that the Republican campaign seeks to promote.
The Congressman has proposed establishing "safe zones" in various countries for asylum seekers to present their cases from there, aiming to ease pressure at the border and protect asylum seekers while weakening traffickers.
In addition to immigration, González also focuses on protecting citizens' pocketbooks, ensuring social security, and access to water. He highlights the rebound of the U.S. economy, which has grown at a healthy pace, and expresses his concern about water access in his region, advocating for the renegotiation of the 1944 water treaty with Mexico.
The Congressman relies on the support of voters in his district, which is 87% Hispanic residents, and calls for voter participation to work together for the benefit of the country, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating the political strength of the community.
